AlphaLAN++ 9.0— The
new Power in PC Connectivity gets Internet security (SSH2 client) and Windows style interface (GUI) functions.
This bulletin announces
AlphaLAN++ 9.0. This version of AlphaLAN++
9.0
offers many new and exciting features over the earlier versions. Various features of this powerful new
product flow from two driving objectives:
-
Technically
innovative & Lightening fast —
Technology ingredients include MFC(Microsoft’s Foundation
Classes)/C++ coding, MDI ( Multiple Document Interface) and
OLE (Object Linking and
Embedding)*. AlphaLAN++
is a 32-bit application. It was designed and developed expressly for
the Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000 and NT desktops keeping a strong
emphasis on performance while maintaining a reasonable price for our
customers.
-
Planned
for the new millennium — AlphaLAN++
is designed so that our customers may order it, install it,
and obtain
technical support through the Internet. We believe that this would provide
a fast, easy, efficient and economical method for purchasing our software
and obtaining technical support for it.

Color selection and
attribute
mapping:
You can make use of many new features to make your
text screens for the host application look more colorful or look like
windows program. The changes are broadly in the following
categories.
-
Change the intensity of the color palette
(Settings, Screen, Color Palette).
-
Screen background and foreground (Text)
color selection for non-color terminals. Starting with this
version, the default selection will be black letters on white background
for non-color terminals. The border will be in silver color. This would
make the color scheme look similar to that used by Windows programs like
notepad, Microsoft Word, etc.
-
Map attributes to colors. This
feature allows you to map an attribute (such as underline or blinking)
to a distinctive color. A default mapping is provided for non-color
terminals for various attributes. Attributes are not mapped for color
terminals but you may do so from the ‘Attribute Colors’ tab.
Please note that these changes to your host screens
are achieved without any need to change your host
application.
-
Windows style menus and
local context menu for your host
applications:
The new version allows
you to add menu items (or completely replace AlphaLAN++ menu) on the
menu bar. You can also
add menu items to the local Context Menu (invoked when you right click
the mouse on the terminal emulation window). For details, refer to
help, contents, and ‘host interface for special commands’.
-
Special host
commands to access advanced terminal
functions:
A variety of advanced
functions are now available to your host applications in all
emulations. These include mouse support, wide screen modes (161 column
screens), more lines (up to 96 lines), set foreground and background
colors, map attributes to colors, get product name and version
information,
etc.

-
Internet Browser Support.
Version 8.0 can start an “Internet Browser Session”. The browser
session offers a “Navigation Toolbar” with browser functions like Stop,
Refresh, Back, Forward, Close, etc. It can support multiple “Terminal”
and “Browser” sessions and you can easily switch between these
“”sessions”. You can start a browser session by using the menu, or
typing the “URL” in the Addressbar, or by using a special “Escape Code”
from your host program. A
new command line option (/b) is available to start the application
with a browser session
instead of a terminal session.
-
An
Addressbar and URL Support.
Version 8.0 supports an addressbar in each terminal session. Addressbar
allows you to type in any URL. AlphaLAN will start a new browser session
for your URL. If you type a FTP URL, or a mail URL, it will start UA-FTP
session or your email program.
-
Automation Server.
AlphaLAN++ 8.0 offers automation services allowing you to
control your host application session through a program written in
Visual Basic, C++, etc. A
variety of properties & methods are exposed for you to set
connection parameters, send startup commands to the host, send data to
the host, wait for certain response from the host, get screen data, etc.
-
Docking
tool bars for function keys, special keys, etc.
-
Keyboard
Remapper. Advanced
keyboard remapper allows you to map various keys to send the codes that
your host application needs. These codes may also be entered as
“hexa-decimal” values.
-
User-Defined
Keys. This feature allows you to have buttons on
your screen that you can pre-program to perform various tasks on
your host or your local workstation.
Version 8.0 supports a “Rebar
(Coolbar)” that can show 4 “bands”, each band corresponding to each
“Level” of User Defined Keys. These keys appear as Toolbar buttons.
Address bar appears as the fifth band in this Coolbar. The bands can be
joined together for a single row display or separated into different
rows.
By
using this new feature, you can be in complete control of your desktop right
from the main terminal emulation window.
-
UA-FTP
application.
It is the easiest way to transfer files across the Web or any TCP/IP
network. The new UA-FTP has a versatile view with splitter windows.
Drag & Drop support, Windows Explorer like interface, and file
transfer integration with Windows Explorer make it the most advanced, yet simple,

Version 8.0 offers new features to “close” the session or “exit” the
session (close the session & exit the application). Host commands
“DOS/D” and “DOS” can be used to perform these functions, respectively.
You can also automatically close the session and exit the application,
when you disconnect your Telnet session (or Modem Connection) to the
host. You can also elect to minimize your main application window by
using DOS/M command.
-
Optional
LPD/LPR services for Windows client —
The WinLPD feature lets you print both ways on TCP/IP connections: from
host applications to PC printers using LPD, and from PC applications to
“host” printers using LPR.
-
Host Programming
Interface . Allows you to enhance your Unix and
AMOS applications by using a variety of new Windows Interface functions.
These functions are broadly classified in the following categories.

up . Allows you to start multiple sessions
on start up and let you Tile or Cascade these windows, automatically.
- Individual window sizes for
sessions in multiple processes . Saves the
window position of the application under the configuration file name
(.aln file). This would allow you to start multiple processes of the
applications (using separate .aln files) and have individual window
sizes and positions for each of these application processes
(sessions).
